A collective voice

Create a Canada where PayTechs can thrive

Who we are

Established in May 2019, PayTechs of Canada is a not-for-profit association that provides a harmonized voice for PayTech firms to better Canada’s payments systems. Collectively, we identify issues and advocate for positive change on behalf of our members and the payments community. We cultivate an environment where PayTechs can not only grow but thrive together in Canada.

Our mission

To drive continuous improvements in Canada’s payments ecosystem and achieve the best possible payment experience for Canadians. We believe this is accomplished by promoting solutions-oriented advocacy, invoking effective government regulations, and enabling enhanced industry competition.

Our goals

In the interest of our members, Canadian consumers, businesses, and government, we are working to improve Canada’s national payments system. We have three primary strategic goals:

Offer greater
choice

Improve critical infrastructure

Broaden payment access

Goal

Have an Open Banking framework implemented in Canada.

Have a modern payment system deployed, such as a Real-Time Rail.

Have PayTech firms directly participate in the payment system.

Description

Give consumers and businesses control over who can access their deposit, transaction or other financial data, currently held by the banks and other institutions.

Create the availability of a ubiquitous and accessible system where the payment and settlement happens instantly, and supports robust data.

Enable PayTechs to originate and exchange payments on behalf of their personal and business clients, by participating directly in Payments Canada systems.

Outcome

Fintechs will have the opportunity to reshape the competitive landscape and consumer experience of the banking industry.

Canadian businesses can enhance participation in global commerce, improve cash flow, and reduce payment risk.

PayTechs can offer better services to their clients and reduce operational and agency risks.

Our commitment

Our commitment is to showcase tangible improvements to the payments system through greater technical efficiencies, enhanced safety, and increased innovation. These improvements will benefit Canadians with more payment-related options across all value chain levels, such as peer-to-peer, business-to-business, wholesale, and technical support services.

Our pillars for success

Independent research

Conduct primary Canadian research and leverage international developments to support the Canadian PayTech sector, including: market segmentation, legal and regulatory developments and investment trends to support the achievement of our strategic goals.

Community of interest

Advance the industry-wide dialogue to improve Canada’s payments system with ecosystem participants and regulators. As the only national and collaborative forum for PayTech firms, our members rely on us to raise issues and explore opportunities.

Voice of the industry

Make available opportunities to secure and reflect on the views of PayTech firms. Leverage our position in the industry to bring a greater awareness to the priority issues and strategies for addressing them, through the appropriate means of communication.

Policy development

Identify regulatory and non-regulatory obstacles impeding the active participation and growth of PayTech firms in Canada. Advocate to key government departments and elected officials to effect positive and sustainable change through effective policy creation.
